Free To Be Me

Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively using words of despair. Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble.

Spoken word developed as a platform for social commentary, social justice issues, and as an advocacy, giving people a voice to be heard in a forum where words rule. Like any art, spoken word has the power to move us, stretch our ideas, and to create change.

Free to Be Me Youth Poetry Slam will motivate, educate, and give youth a voice to express their feelings, emotions and concerns. This “competition” of poetry gives students from every possible neighborhood and suburb a chance to listen, share, and build a community with each other through the simple ancient act of sharing their stories.

Free to Be Me Youth Poetry Slam will also have a current event panel at all competitions with guests ranging from politicians to musicians, discussing issues that affect our youth.
